Aim: Through a partly integrated study of elementary quantum mechanics and solid state physics, the necessary and systematic basis is established for advanced courses in condensed matter physics specialising in semiconductor physics and technology, superconductivity, materials physics, and surface physics. |
Contents: Structure of solids: Crystal lattices, defects, amorphous and fluid matter. Electronic properties: Free and nearly-free electron model, tight-binding model, energy band structure, band gaps, electrical conductivity, and optical properties. Characteristics of metals, semiconductors, and insulators. Lattice vibrations: Phonons, heat capacity, heat conduction, and anharmonic effects. Relevant experimental methods in solid state physics are discussed. |
