Aim: To impart knowledge about the propagation of ultrasonic waves, their interplay with media, and their applications within research and industry. |
Contents: An introductory repetition is given of the general physics of waves regarding longitudinal bulk waves, irrotational rod waves, shear waves, surface waves in solid materials, liquids, and gases. Further, features of generating and detecting ultrasonic waves are discussed. Interplay between waves and media in regard to fenomena of attenuation and scattering of the waves. Basic principles for measurements: puls-echo methods, Doppler methods, mode conversion etc., are discussed on quantitative terms. Acoustic emission, plastic deformation, fatique, holography, acousto-optics, are options for seminars to be held by the students. Three subjects are chosen to be studied experimentally in the laboratory by the students in groups of no more than three students. |
