Aim: To give the student an understanding of thermal and flow conditions in a reactor, to allow him/her to solve practical problems relating to heat transport and radiation shielding in a reactor and to give him/her the necessary basis for further studies in reactor technology.
Contents: Determination of power and temperature distribution in a nuclear reactor. The fuel is assumed to be fuel rods. Calculation of the heat transfer from the fuel rods to the coolant, of the coolant pressure loss and the necessary pumping power; these calculations are for single-phase flow systems. Problems connected to boiling in a reactor coolant, including derivation of heat transfer and pressure loss formulas. Development of energy- and mass balances for boiling water reactors. Design calculation for shielding problems in reactors.
