| Aim: The course objective is to give the student an insight into basic electromagnetism and the magnetic characteristics of materials, so that he/she will be able to choose adequate materials, to use electromagnetic components/apparatus in a correct manner, and to design simple components/apparatus |
Contents: Maxwells Equations in integral form. Magnetic flux density and magnetic field strength. Magnetic fields produced by currents. Magnetic forces.
Magnetic induction. Lenz' law. Self-inductance and mutual inductance: Definition, calculation of L and M for simple geometries, self- induction and mutual inductance as component characteristics or as parasitic elements. L and M in circuit theory. Electromagnetic field energy. Magnetic materials and their characteristics. Permeability. Eddy current and hysteresis loss.
Magnetic components/apparatus: Examples of components/apparatus, based on electromagnetic principles, including Hall generators, coils, small transformers, linear magnetic circuits, magnetic circuits with non-linear/permanent magnetic materials and electromagnetic transducers.
Plane waves in lossless media. |
