92902 VLSI - design
Danish title: VLSI - design

Type: Å, Language: DDD
Credit points: 5 point
Offered by: Department of Applied Electronics (IAE)
No credit points with: D4683
Prerequisite: 92042
Recommended semester: 5th or 6th semester
Scope and form: Class lectures and project work.
Examination: Evaluation of report(s) (13 point scale )
Contact person: Jørn Bang, IAE, Building 451, Tel. +45 4525 5236
Aim: The aim of the course is to teach the students:
- to design and implement digital circuits on chip level,
- to design smaller circuits on full custom level, by assistance of simulation programs, to ensure that the desired characteristics are obtained,
- to accomplish lay out (mask description) of a smaller design
- to prepare the necessary documentation for the chip manufacturer.
Contents: Description of processes used for chip manufacturing. Description of the function of MOS transistors, their geometry, and electrical characteristics. Technical methods for designing and minimization of digital circuits in CMOS technology. Full custom design of smaller circuits by means of a graphical editor, at the moment L-EDIT, succeeded by extraction and simulation of the characteristics for the electrical circuits. Design of smaller digital circuits by means of standard cells.
It includes: 1) Schematic capture, 2) conversion of netlist, 3) post layout simulation, 4) conversion to the chosen technology, 5) placement and connection of cells, 6) extraction of electrical parameters (backannotation), and 7) simulation of the characteristics for the electrical circuits. The above mentioned methods are used both for programmable logic and silicon circuits.
Tasks and examples of a standard process from a chip foundry are available.
At the moment a 2 double metal double poly-process is used.
