Aim: To give a basic knowledge of chemical bonding and of the characteristics of the most important elements, based on their placement in the periodic table. To give a basic knowledge of stoichiometric calculations, general chemistry and the theory of quantitative analysis. |
Contents: The construction of the periodic table of the elements with emphasis upon regularities, main group chemistry and selected transition metal chemistry. Theory of chemical bonding, including M.O. theory, the VSEPR model and bonding in complexes. The mole, calculation of concentrations, the law of mass action, solubility and solubility product, the concept of acids and bases, acid base titrations, pH calculations in protolytic systems, redox processes and titrations, electrochemistry and potentiometry. |
