Aim: The aim of the course is to introduce the student to the basic biology of unicellular organisms, their structure and the main biochemical reactions within the cell. Through exercises in the laboratory to achieve skill in basic bacteriological and biochemical techniques.
Contents: Theory: Biochemical function of macromolekules: polysaccharides, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids. Basic enzymology and kinetics. The structure of the prokaryotic cell and the unicellular eukaryotic cell. Basic catabolic metabolisms: Glycolysis, Tricarboxylic Acid Cycle, Respiration, Catabolism of lipids and amino acids. Regulation of the catabolic processes. Energy relations in aerobic and anaerobic metabolisms. Protein synthesis. Influence of nutrition and environmental factors on microbial kinetics of growth. Examples of the importance of microorganisms in production and in the environment. Laboratory exercises: Sterilisation, aseptic metodololy, microscopy. Growth of microorganisms: selection, purification and enrichment of cultures. Influence of environmental factors on growth and development of microorganisms. Bath fermentation: yield and growth kinetics. Analysis of biological molekules: proteins, carbohydrates and lipids. Enzymology: isolation and activity of enzymes.
