Aim: The aim of the course is to introduce the principles and applications of fluid mechanics to chemical engineering equipment and operations. |
Contents: Fluid Statics: Pressure and pressure measurement. Pressure forces on surfaces. Surface phenomena: Surface tension, interfacial tension, pressure under curved surfaces. The continuity equation. The energy equation. The impulse equation for a stationary flow. Laminar flow: Newtonian and non-Newtonian flow. Rotation viscometers. Laminar flow in tubes: Poiseuille's equation. Kinetic energy correction factor. Dimensional analysis. Fanning's equation. Friction factors for flow in tubes, through granular solids, through shellsides of heat exchangers. Friction losses in fittings and valves. Measurement of liquid flow: Orifices, pitot tube, rotameter etc. The centrifugal pump: Characteristic curve, NPSH, model laws, affinity laws. Axial pump. Piston, plunger and other positive pumps. Packings for pumps. Calculation of pump power. Ventilators and compressors: Types, calculation of isentropic power requirement. Efficiencies. Vacuum pumps: Mechanical, steam ejector systems. Tubes and pipes in chemical engineering use. Pipe fittings, flanges, welding. Valves: Globe, gate, diaphragm, ball. Safety valves, check valves. Calculation of plate thicknesses of vessels under internal pressure (Danish codes). Sedimentation free and hindered. Centrifuges. Flotation. |
