Credit points: 5 point
Offered by: Department of Applied Chemistry (IFAK)
Prerequisite: D7021.D7342.D7346.91711.D7371 (parallelt)
Recommended semester: 6th or 7th semester
Limitation: Max. 24
Examination: Evaluation of report and oral presentation (13 point scale )
Contact person: Kate Nielsen, IFAK, Building 375, Tel. +45 4525 5446
Aim: To give the students insight in how chemical reactions between supply water and pipe materials will lead to undesirable changes of both water and pipe materials. The variety of problems is illustrated and the control methods, that are used in practice to achieve technologically satisfactory solutions are described. Emphasis is laid on the students ability, on the basis of a range of technical literature (articles, standards, etc.), to present their own interpretation of a technical field.
Individual project-orientated work, under the requirement of presenting results for fellow students, is used to achieve a greater self-assurance and training in oral presentation and discussion.
Contents: Basic water chemistry and corrosion theory. Specific chemistry for reactions between water and materials: electrochemistry, kinetics, migration, precipitation, microorganic activities, other mechaniesms and technological consequences. Technology of materials with emphasis on matals, but also plastics and ceramics to a certain degree. Actual pipe qualities and connection methods. Public standards. Investigation of failure and materials. examples of analytical equipment.
