Aim: The aim of the course is to give the student an introduction to biotechnology.
Contents: 1. Elementary microbioloigy: Fysiology, growth and its control, general life cycles of bacteria, yeasts and molds. 2. Introduction to industrial fermentation technology: Media formulation, microbial growth kinetics, submers fermentation, selected fermentations of primary and secundary products. 3. Introduction to industrial enzymes: Production, isolation and purification, enzyme kinetics, enzyme inhibition, examples of technological applications. 4. Introduction to food-technology: Significanse of food technology, composition of foods, food spoilage, food preservation by heat treatment processes, water activity control and freezing. Kinetics of sterilization.
