Aim: To give the students basic knowledge of the structures of crystalline materials, which is necessary to 1) describe and classify crystalline materials by common analytical methods, 2) calculate distances and angles in crystal structures as well as density and concentration of vacancies from information on composition and unit cell dimensions, and 3) understand the general relations between structures of crystalline compounds and their chemical and physical properties. |
Contents: Symmetry in crystal structures: Symmetry operations, crystal classes, Bravais space lattices, point and space groups. The stereographic projection. Crystal morphology, twins and epitaxy. Interatomic bonds and coordination polyhedron. Isotopy, isomorphy and polymorphy. Lattice defects. Electrical, optical, mechanical, and thermal properties of crystalline compounds. Optical and X-ray methods for analysis. Minerals, alloys, classical and advanced technical ceramics are used as illustrations. |
