Aim: To provide the students with a theoretical basis concerning the application of molecular biology concepts and methods in microbial ecology in connection with investigations of simple and complex microbial communities. |
Contents: The course is based on presentations and discussions of scientific articles from relevant journals and project seminars from departmental and invited contributers. There are three sections in the course: 1. Presentation and discussion of the fundamental concepts and methods (physiology, in situ techniques, microbial communities, single cell investigations etc.). 2. Specific discussions of selected topics concerning microbial phenomena and characteristics relevant to the field of microbial ecology. 3. Discussion of selected cases communicated in recent papers. Among the central microbial ecology topics to be dealt with, the following deserves mentioning: Organism identification, interactions between organisms and between organisms and the environment, structures found in microbial surface communities, and communication and regulatory activities in bacterial populations. |
