Aim: To show the student how to derive, analyze and solve partial differential equations from physics and engineering science. |
Contents: Analytical part: Classification of second-order partial differential equations. First-order systems. Fourier transformation of partial differential equations. The Green's function. Modelling by means of the calculus of variations.
Numerical part: The finite difference method, including stability and convergence analysis. Iterative solution of difference equations. Methods for first-order hyperbolic equations, including the method of characteristics. The finite element method. |
