Aim: To give the student a theoretical background and practical expertise in dealing with ecotoxicological problems. Emphasis is put on characterization of the toxic effect of chemical compounds in the environment, including determination methods of these toxic effects.
Contents: Contents: The course consists of practical and theoretical ecotoxocology which involves many disciplines such as chemistry, physics, toxicology, physiology, ecology and mathematics. Emphasis is placed on the probability of undesirable events such as injury, death or decrease in the mass or productivity of single species and populations caused by xenobiotic chemical compounds, also community and ecosystem levels are included. The use of internationally accepted guidelines for toxicity testing is introduced. Good laboratory practice rules are emphasised. The statistical evaluation of dose-effect relationships, and concepts and standards of environmental quality are also discussed. The experimental part includes toxicity testing with algae, higher plants, crustaceans, insects fish, and testing for mutagenicity and biodegradation as well as bioaccumulation and risk assessment calculations. The course is organized on a new chemical topic every year, e. g. detergents, phenols, pesticides, oil components etc.
