Aim: The course provies the students with detailed understanding of the main issues associated with (1) siting and design of waste disposal facilities as landfills and ash-monofills, (2) use of compost and sludge on land and (3) remediation of polluted soils and groundwater. |
Contents: (1) Landfilling: Philosophy of landfilling, principles and time frames. Characteristics of wastes to be landfilled and methods of testing. Processes in the landfill, emissions and environmental impacts. Siting and planning of landfills. Design with respect to capasity, landscape and final use, settlements and disposal technology. Pretreatment (composting, enhanced leaching, etc.). Leachate: Liners/barriers, drainage systems, leachate hydraulics and treatment. Gas: Extraction, treatment and utilization. Operational aspects. Environmental monitoring. (2) Compost and sludge: Characteristics of wate to be used on land: nutrients, patogens, organic and inorganic pollutants, Plant uptake and leaching. Cycling of elements on managed land, management strategies and environmental regulations. (3) Problems, principles and technologies of remediation; Ex-situ treatment of polluted soils: Hyperaccumulating plants, chemical fixation, "trained bacterial inoculation", venting/bioventing, etc. In- situ treatment of polluted groundwater: Air-sparking, chemical fixation/treatment, enhancedment og biological treatment. Intrinsic bioremediation: Principles, methods and limitations. |
