Aim: The course provides the students with detailed understanding of the processes governing the transport and attenuation of pollutants in soils and aquifers.
Contents: Pollution sources, Overview of relevant pollutants and hydrogeology, Site investigations, Soil and groundwater quality criteria, Transport of NAPLs, Dissolution and leaching (also landfills), Sorption of organic pollutants, Microbiology and degradation, Modelling of degradation, Vapour transport of organic pollutants in unsaturated soil, Gas transport from landfills, Soil chemistry of cyanides, Soil chemistry of heavy metals, Ion exchange in aquifers, Redox zones and organic compounds (redox buffering, landfill plumes, plumes from oilspills, creosote). The different processes will especially focus on the following group of pollutants: Aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated aliphatics, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, phenols, pesticides and nitrate.
