Aim: To give the student an understanding of the relationship between the structure and the properties of the solids which are used as construction materials (metals, ceramic materials, and polymers), thus enabling the students to:
1) describe the relationship between the structure and the properties of different construction materials,
2) prescribe processes that will change the structure of materials (heat treatment, deformation, change of composition etc.), in order that the materials may obtain desired properties,
3) select construction materials for applications in which mechanical loading or corrosive influences are known.
Contents: Structural configuration of metals, ceramic materials and polymers. Crystal lattice defects. Mechanical testing and mechanical properties. Fracture types. Phase equilibria. Reaction rates. Microstructures. Deformation and recrystallization. Strengthening processes. Structure of composite materials. Degradation of construction materials, including corrosion and oxidation.
