Aim: To give the students the ability to:
a) characterise the different surface technology process possibilities and limitations
b) describe the properties that can be obtained from surface technological processes as well as to apply these combinations solutions with regard to solving surface technological problems such as corrosion, wear, electrical properties, soldability etc.
c) suggest and select surface technological answers for specific components within the electronic, chemical, building and machine engineering fields with respect to giving specific function properties. |
Contents: Learning about the following process areas and their typical application areas within the field of surface technology: Chemical/electrochemical processes (galvano techniques), gas phase and vacuum processes (CVD, PVD, ion implantation), thermal spraying, hot dipping, enamelling and organic coatings including high temperature coatings. Emphasis will be given to the surfaces physical and technical properties with respect to giving students the ability to choose the optimal surface treatment. Assessment of surface quality will be dealt with based on life cycle considerations.
Process examples: Chomium plating and nickel plating, production of metal coated plastics and ceramics, production of circuit boards, hot-dip galvanising, anodising, electromagnetic shielding, thermal spraying, organic coatings (powder, wet and electrophoresis coating). |
