Aim: To enable the students to assess erosion and sedimentation problems in relation to engineering projects in rivers and along the coast. |
Contents: Basic concepts: Critical bed shear stress, bed load transport and suspended load transport in current and in waves. Bed forms (dunes, sand waves) and their significance for flow resistance and sediment transport. Large scale morphology in rivers (meandering and braiding). Sediment transport formulas for current and for combined waves and current. Long- and cross- shore wave induced currents. Coastal morphology (bars, rip currents, coast line development). Transport of fine cohesive sediments. Sedimentation in harbours and navigation channels. Effect of bank protection and of groynes. Examples from engineering practice.
