Aim: To introduce students to different strategies and approaches to technology assessment and to provide students with a theoretical basis and analytical tools for technology assessment with and emphasis on social shaping approaches. |
Contents: The social shaping of technology percieved as processes from the visions of the researchers through the development work in the laboratories, commodification processes, adaptation and use. Important issues are: The interpretative flexibility of the technology and the multiplicity of players involved. The increasing hardness of the technology as captured by the concepts of 'stabilization' and 'closure', that gradually create the spectrum of potential consequences and narrow down the alternative choices.
The social interaction in arenas, that contribute to the shaping of technology or that potentially could contribute: the state, companies, institutions, organizations and the wider public. Important questions: How is the actual a potential contribution from technology assessment and how can new arenas for the social shaping of technology be developed? |
