Aim: To investigate the local shape of curves and surfaces by means of modern differential geometry and to introduce the fundamental curves and surfaces used in Computer Aided Geometric Design. |
Contents: Plane curves and space curves (including Bézier and B-spline curves). Curvature and torsion. Surfaces in 3-space (including Bézier and B-spline surfaces), tangent vectors, the Gauss map, Gaussian curvature, mean curvature, developable surfaces, surfaces of revolution, minimal surfaces, surfaces of constant curvature, lines of curvature, asymptotic curves, abstract surfaces, introduction to geometric tensor analysis, geodesics. Examples showing the use of computer systems such as Mathematica and Maple. |
