Aim: To introduce the students to advanced mathematical modelling through:
a) formulation of a model of a physical/technical problem and
b) derivation of a mathematical solution procedure based on advanced methods from applied mathematics
c) computer implementation of the model and solution procedure as well as critical analysis of the results. |
Contents: Lectures on the programming languages of FORTRAN 90 and C/C++ including the use of standard numerical packages like IMSL. Lectures in the programming of software for graphics based on MATLAB and/or MAPLE. Solution of a number of problems by groups of 2 students, one problem per group. Each group must formulate a model, program and solve the problem and present the results using the state of the art computer graphics. Each group documents its work in a report. |
