Aim: To enable the students to use spectroscopic methods in appropriate combination for structure determination in the organic chemistry, and for analyses of chemical reactions.
Contents: Basic 1H NMR spectroscopy. Use of the basic 1H NMR parameters. Mass spectrometry: Methods for ionization. Determination of molecular weight and elemental composition. Use of fragmentation patterns. IR spectroscopy: Use of functional group frequencies in structure elucidation. Solid, liquid, and gas-phase spectra. UV-vis. spectroscopy: The nature of electronic transitions. Prediction of absorption frequencies of characteristic chromophores as an aid in structural analysis. Flourescence and phosphorescence.
