Aim: To give the statics for often used structural elements as thin-walled beams and plates and illustrate this by analytical and numerical solutions and by experimental results. Moreover to teach the student methods for determination of the load carrying capacity of thin-walled beams and elastic or elasto-plastic plates with respect to strength and stability. Most buildings are designed with these methods.
Contents: First continuummechanics is introduced covering stresses, strains, virtual work, elasticity and yield. On this basis the linear theory for thin-walled beams with open cross-section is formulated. The importance of cross-section warping is considered and the associated cross-section analysis is treated. The theory is extended to linear stability problems and coupled bending-torsion instability and lateral instability is treated.
Next the linear theory for thin plates in bending is given and illustrated by typical elastic plate bending solutions. The theory is extended to linear stability problems as buckling of plates in plate girders. Finally the yield line theory for the load carrying capacity of elasto-plastic plates in bending is given.
