Aim: The student will gain understanding as well as insight with respect to the coherence between structure and properties of materials for electrical engineering applications. He or she will also be able to select conductive, insulating, and magnetic materials for engineering applications in components and apparatuses.
Contents: The nature of gasses, liquids, and solids including the bonds between atoms and molecules. The electrical properties of gases including air and vacuum. The applications of gases. The composition of liquids. Electrical insulating liquids and conductive liquids, their electrical properties and applications. The crystalline and amorphous solids (polymers, ceramics and glasses, metals and semimetals, and composites), their electrical and magnetic properties. The electrical engineering applications of these solids. Throughout the course the engineering significance of material properties is being emphasized.
