Aim: Students should become familiar with the use of computers for molecular structure and sequence analysis, with special emphasis on applications in microbiology, biotechnology and biotech industry.
Contents: Bioinformatics in the genome era. Application in industry, medicine and basic resaerch. Sequence comparison and alignment: pairwise alignment, multiple alignment, phylogeny and database search. Prediction using neural networks and Markov Models. Genome projects from bacteria to man. Protein structure and function. HIV phylogeny. Practical exercises in alignment and prediction.
