| Aim: According to WHO the lack of safe water supply and adequate means of sanitation is blamed, at least in part, for as much as 80% of all diseases in developing countries. The aim of this course is to design a water supply, waste water and solid waste handling system for a village or town in a developing country. The purpose is to improve the health conditions. The technical solution must adapt to the economic, educational, socological, cultural and religious background of the population. |
| Contents: The course consists of 3 parts of each one weeks work, and focuses on a selected villageor town for each group.1st week: Health analysis. General knowledge is obtained about the prevailing diseases in the respective areas, specifically about water and sanitation related diseases. Existing facilities, sources of infection and measures against infections are described. 2nd week: Basic facts. The sociological, cultural, religious, economical, and natural (climate, topography, etc.) conditions, which are significant for a technical solution are analysed. 3rd week: Appropriate technical solutions are suggested and sketch-projections on one or more of these are carried out. Each week groups should present their work both orally and written. |
