80223 Numerical modelling of thermal processes of materials
Danish title: Numerisk modellering af termiske materialeprocesser

Type: Å, Language: E
Credit points: 10 point
Previous course: C8023
Offered by: Department of Manufacturing Engineering (IPT)
No credit points with: C8023
Prerequisite: 80201
Recommended semester: 7th - 9th semester
Scope and form: Lectures and exercises
Examination: Evaluation of report and oral presentation (13 point scale )
Contact person: Jesper Hattel, IPT, Building 425, Tel. +45 4525 4710
Aim: To enable the students to develop and use computer based methods in numerical simulation of thermal processing of materials
Contents: Lectures: Numerical methods for simulation of thermal processing of materials especially the control volume based finite difference method. Thermal resistance. Formulation in polar co-ordinates. Explicit and implicit algorithms. Stability analysis. Crank-Nicholson's method and the ADI method. Analytical solutions based on the error function. Riemann temperature. Algorithms for the release of latent heat. Modelling of thermal and mechanical fields in welding.Thermal stresses and deformations in casting. Determination of material data. Inverse modelling.

Exercises: Development and programming of algorithms for simulation of thermal processing of materials, especially casting. The first part of the exercises which is compulsory, consists of modelling of solidification of a sand casted plate. The result are compared with measurement. During the second part the students choose a small modelling project within the field of thermal processing of materials.
