Aim: To give the student a thorough knowledge of the construction and equipment of different types of ships, including the installations in the engine room, plus the methods used for designing and constructing (building) ships.
Contents: Types of ships (dry cargo ships, bulk carriers, tankers, container ships, tugboats). General construction of a ship (steel construction, outfit, machinery accommodation).
Ship planning (conditions of shipping companies, drafts, main project, lines, decision of powerplants, contracts, plan in details).
Shipyard practice (structure of the shipyard, methods of production, preparation of production, production.)
The methods learned are exercised by designing a ship, i.e. preparing a general arrangement, an engine-room layout and an outline specification. During this process the hull form, machinery, outfit and arrangement are designed in detail while the conditions demanded by propulsion, stability and buoyancy are fulfilled. Besides, the machinery is optimized with respect to required power, weight, space available, fuel economy and reliability.
