Aim: 1) To strengthen the students¿ ability to understand especially written, but also spoken German.

2) To strengthen the students¿ ability write and especially speak in German about general as well as technical topics (including accurate representation of German texts).

3) To strengthen the students¿ ability of accurate understanding of text contexts in a different language, i.e. obtain understanding by using relevant tools (dictionary, encyclopedia, grammatical analysis); and to develop strategies to point out the essentials, the purpose and the structure of the text in order to make the representation show an obvious general view and explanation.

4) To familiarize the students with social and general cultural conditions (customs, social conventions, problems) which can be of importance in the understanding of German texts.
Contents: Conversations about read as well as heard texts, including understanding check-up by translations and questions. Preparation of introductions and written representation assignments about technical as well as general cultural topics.
Secondarily the course gives an overview of the most necessary inflexion and word order problems. Active participation is necessary.
