Department: Department of Applied Engineering Design and Production
Aim: Mechanics. To give the student an understanding of the laws and basic concepts of mechanical physics. The student should be able to determine forces and motion of a particle in a plane and in space.
Contents: Mechanics: Units in the theory of mechanics, SI-units.
Kinematics: Lineat motion, constant speed, constant acceleration, arbitrary acceleration. Circular motion. Arbitrary plane motion expressed in Cartesian coordinates and in polar coordinates.
Statics: Forces and moments. Equilibrium conditions for particles, rigid bodies and mechanisms in a plane.
Dynamics of particles: Velocity and acceleration. Newton's laws. Momentum equation. Work, kinetic energy and potential energy. Energy equation.
Strength of materials: Section loadings in beams. Stresses in beams loaded in tension, torsion and bending.
