Aim: The course objective is, by dealing with a specific project, to practice an industry oriented way of organizing when dealing with large product develop-ment projects. Some of the general characteristics for such projects are:
1. That they have to be made as a group work
2. That the members of the group are specialists in different fields,
3. That decisions concerning (form and content of) the group work should be made as group decisions, which means that responsibility for the project is shared by all members of the group, and finally
4. That the project has to be finished in due time.
The work is organized by using a systematic approach to engineering design, which means a split up of the design process into main phases as "investigation of the need phase", "product principle phase" and "product design phase".
|
Contents: The course consist of two parts being closely interconnected. The major part is a group work concerning the development of a product, proposed by the teaching staff. In the project both technological, economical and marketing issues must be considered. The minor part of the course is lectures, including management methods to be used during the development process and technical/econimocal issues with relevance to the product in consideration. The kind of product is normally concerning mechanical and/or thermal design, but often linked with electronics, computer technology and control equipment. Information technology tools shoul be used where possible.
The students are trained in thoroughly communica-tion of the results in reports and drawings. These have to include market aspects and/or research results, product synthesis, product idea, product aspects and economy in such a way that the material will contain the optimal value for an external prospect.
