Aim: To teach basic principles of experimental work with biological matter (tissue, cells and biomolecules). Focussing also on environmentally relevant topics (the influence of toxic substances on enzyme reactions, growth, regulation, bacteriological water analysis), the course expands on the theory from lecture course 24001 in a vivid manner.
|
Contents: The chemical composition of the cell, detection and physical chemical characterisation of biomacromolecules (DNA, RNA, protein, lipid, carbohydrate). Cell metabolism: investigation of metabolic processes and their regulation, including measurement of enzyme reactions and the influence of toxic substances (enzyme kinetics and inhibition). Microbiological techniques: sterile techniques, cell culture, isolation of industrial relevant strains from the nature, waste water analysis, and bacteria in food fermentation. DNA technology: gene cloning and purification and analysis of DNA.
