Department: Department of Structural Engineering and Materials
Aim: To give the students a thorough knowledge of properties of building materials.
Contents: 1) General materials properties.
2) Moisture in concrete: Moisture fixation, moisture transport by water pressure, diffusion and capillary suction, drying calculations, critical values for moisture contents. Examples of damage on polymers, wood, concrete and steel, moisture measurements.
3) Materials mechanics. Composite materials, rheology, fracture mechanics.
4) Corrosion. Theory, potentials, prevention, steel for reinforcement, cathodic protection.
5) Polymers. Structure and application, gluing, sealants, materials for thermal insulation, surface treatment, environmental problems.
6) Life cycle assessment in building industry.
Four laboratory exercises are carried out: 1) drying of lightweight concrete, 2) corrosion of metals, 3) concrete: Moisture and durability, 4) production of polymers.
