Department: Department of Structural Engineering and Materials
Aim: To provide an in-depth treatment of the structure/property relationship for wood and timber. To introduce the students to the use of wood and wood based materials in timber engineering.
Contents: A treatment of the structure of wood is provided followed by a treatment of such physical and mechanical properties which are of particular engineering importance. The following topics are addressed: Wood structure including wood chemistry, wood anatomy, wood microstructure, wood macrostructure, anomalies in wood, identification. Wood and water including sorption isotherms, capillary transport, diffusion, shrinkage/swelling. Mechanical properties including creep and fracture mechanics. Glue and gluing. Heat-, electrical- and acoustical properties. Panel products. Chemical and biological degradation. Wood preservation. Renovation. Non-destructive evaluation of wood.
