Department: Department of Structural Engineering and Materials
Aim: To provide a thorough understanding of finite element theory, implementation and applications.
Contents: The finite element method (FEM) based on virtual work. Finite elements for plane stress and strain, plate bending, shells and 3-dimensional continua. Estimation of discretization errors and numerical errors. Generalization of FEM from statics to dynamics (free and forced vibration), and from linear to non-linear problems (plasticity, stability). The exercises include modification of a finite element computer program and applications of a standard FEM-program.
