Aim: During the last couple of generations a theory for the strength of reinforced concrete, based on the theory of plasticity, has been developed in Denmark. This theory has to a large extent been incorporated in codes in Denmark as well as abroad. The main advantage of the theory is that it is more consistent than the previously used empirical methods. This has the implication that, based on a few basic assumptions, it is possible to develop theories for a broad c/955 of topics such as bending, shear, torsion and combinations of these for design of beams, slabs, disks and shells.
Contents: Short survey of the theory of plasticity for rigid-plastic bodies. Yield conditions for plain concrete. Yield conditions for disks, slabs and shells. Determination of reinforcement. Determination of load-carrying capacity of disks, deep beams and beams with holes. Design for shear (diagonal compression fields method), torsion and combined actions in beams. Theory of slabs with emphasis on the strip method. Theory of shells in the ultimate limit state with emphasis on the stringer method. Punching of slabs and shells. Shear strength of construction joints.
