Department: Research Center COM
Aim: To give the students a solid background in the physical and technological understanding of optical integrated systems and the components used to build such systems. Optical integrated circuits are expected to play a significant role for future engineers. Research Center COM develops a range of integrated optical components, and there is an excellent basis for experiments in this important field. This course aims also at forming a good basis for experimental MSc thesis projects in the area of integrated optics.
Contents: The fabrication techniques for optical integrated circuits are introduced. Optical waveguides, their geometries and mutual coupling are studied. The course also includes a review of the building blocks in optical integrated circuits: passive and active waveguide circuits, integrated electro-optic modulators, lasers, and optical amplifiers. Applications of optical integrated circuits will be discussed in the end of the course.
