Department: Department of Solid Mechanics
Aim: To provide the student with insight in the correlation between design and choice of materials. To enable the student to choose suitable materials for a given design and to modify designs, considering mechanical properties of the applied materials. It is emphasized that the student
-becomes familiar with those properties, that empirically are of vital importance to the applicability of a material for structural purposes.
-acquires a general view of the connections between different material properties. This is partly obtained by describing material micro structures.
-obtains knowledge of application properties of different types of materials
Contents: Material application properties in general. Price and availability. Energy consumption connected with extraction and manufacturing. Thermo mechanical properties: Elasticity, plasticity, creep, fatigue and fracture. Strength improving micro mechanisms. Material types: Metals, ceramics, polymers, fibre- and particle strenghtend materials. Surface abilities: friction, wear and tear. Emphasis will be put on a broad introduction to the subject, which will be supplemented with case studies.
