Aim: The purpose of this course is to give the student an understanding and practical knowledge of the way a variety of optical components work and their application, eg. lasers, lenses, polarization elements, birefringence components etc. Emphasis is placed upon the practical part, partly by the use of illustrating experiments and partly by doing experimental or numerical exercises with optical components.
|
Contents: Properties of light. Radiometry. Light sources. Detectors. Geometrical optics. Imaging components including prisms, mirrors, and lenses. Information and energy transfer in imaging. Polarising components. Wavelength-dependent components. Matrix and computer methods. Experimental and computational exercises.
