Aim: The course gives the student an understanding of the fundamental electrical, magnetical and optical properties of semiconductors with special emphasis on the application oriented aspects.
|
Contents: Basic structural and electronic properties of semiconductors, in particular for the Si-family (Si, Ge and GaAs). Energy band diagrams. Band edges and energy band gaps. Fermi-Dirac statistics for semiconductors. Transport theory. Boltzmann model. Scattering processes i spherical one-valley potential. Electrical conductance, including temperature dependence. Hall effect and magnetoconductivity. Thermal conductance. Thermo-electric and piezo electric effects. Hot electron. Diffusion, injection and recombination of carriers. p-n junctions. Quasi-Fermi levels. Bipolar transistor, metal-semiconductor junction (Schottky). Optical effects. Absorption and reflection. Photo-electric effects. Quantum effects in heterostructures.
