Aim: Surface physics is a natural extension of solid state physics and is today a discipline of its own with multifarious relations to different areas such as chemistry and applied technology. The objective of this course is to give the student an understanding of the physical/chemical laws that determine the behavior of surfaces on an atomic scale.
Contents: Quantum mechanical description of the electronic and geometrical structure of clean surfaces. Description of adsorbates on surfaces with respect to electronic structure, phase transition in two dimensions, epitaxial growth, adsorption/desorption-mechanisms, chemisorption and dynamics of chemical processes, and heterogeneous catalysis.
