Aim: To introduce a set of concepts and techniques that can be used for modeling of systems for which equations of motion have not previously been established. Special emphasis is given to a description of the mechanisms by which oscillations, bifurcations and chaos arise. The role of instabilities in living systems is discussed. Mechanisms for biological pattern formation are described, and methods to characterize nonlinear dynamic phenomena presented.
Contents: Causal loop and flow diagrams. Model formulation. Dynamic phenomena in complex systems. The role of feedbacks, nonlinearities, time delays, and instabilities. Examples of chaos in physiological, biological, ecological, micro and macroeconomic, technical and physical systems. Fractal dimension. Lyapnov exponent. Biological pattern Formation.
