Aim: The course aims towards an introduction into the fundamental properties of lasers. The student must be able to explain the physical principles behind laser action and to describe a number of actual laser systems. He/she must be able to solve simple problems in relation to the properties of light in optical resonators, coherent light and the interaction between light and matter. The application of a number of lasers is described so that the student will be able to use commercial laser systems in connection with an actual problem. In addition to the theoretical course an experimental course running over 6 afternoons is given. The purpose of this course is to provide the student with an experimental knowledge of coherent optical radiation, laser systems, laser components and applications.
Contents: Electromagnetic wave propagation, Gaussian beams, optical resonators, theory of laser action. Different laser systems: Solid state lasers (ruby, Nd), gaslasers (He-Ne, CO2, Ar, N2), semiconductor lasers, dye lasers and chemical lasers. Laser security. The experimental part includes: Practical work with different laser types, investigations of beam parameters and mode structure. Frequency doubling of laser light. Applications of coherent optics.
