Aim: The objective of the course is to enable the student to:
- understand and apply optical devices
- perform elementary optical measurements
- implement optoelectronic components in design and development
|
Contents: Geometrical optics: Optical imaging, lenses and mirrors, paraxial ray
matrices, abrerations optical invarinats and energy relations,
optical systemes and components.
Wave optics: Electromagnetic waves, Gaussian beams, interference and
interferometry, diffraction gratings, multiple film layers. Polarised
light and birefringence.
Photon optics: The principle of complementarity, interaction between
wave and matter.
Fiber optics: Fiberoptical principles and sensors.
Lightsources: Lasers (gas and diode lasers), LED's, conventional
sources.
Detectors: Thermal detectors ( thermoelectric, bolometers,
pyrometers). Photon detectors (photon emitters, photomultiplicator
tubes, photocinductors, photodiodes). Noise considerations.
