Department: Department of Automation
Aim: To enable the students to solve advanced problems of image analysis, within the limitations of a microcomputer.
Contents: Lectures: An introduction to the concepts of image generation, image processing and image analysis. Afterwards, a brief run-through of elementary geometrical optics: perspectivistic projection, spherical mirrors, lenses and prisms. Image tesselation and digitalisation are explained, using the application of CCD technology with videocameras as a basis. The analysis of binary images will encompass the determination of area, 1. and 2. moments and object orientation. In conjunction with this topic, topological properties, data compression and contour search will be dealt with. The theoretical image processing covers linear, shift-invariant systems, convolutions, the point spread function, image filtering and Fourier transformation. Finally, the fundamental concepts of colour theory are explained. Exercises: Work will be carried out in pairs, each provided with a PC. Timetables are arranged with the individual project supervisors. The exercises will commence with a number of tasks that illustrate the presented syllabus, after which each group must solve a larger exercise independantly. This exercise is concluded with a written report on which the final assessment will be based.
