Aim: Introduction of a number of fundamental concepts in mechanical physics, which are important for the understanding of other courses and in professional engineering applications. Training in analysing physical situations, setting up appropiate equations and solving them. Special emphasis is put on the development of a critical, scientific approach when applying general formulas and methods to specific situations.
Contents: Kinematics: Vector representation of velocity and acceleration. Curvilinear motion. Tangential and normal components of acceleration. Relative velocity.
Dynamics: Newton's laws. Conservation of linear and angular momentum. Frictional forces between solid materials and in fluids. Coriolis' force. Centrifugal force. Frames of reference with linear acceleration and rotation. Work. Power. Conservative and nonconservative forces. Potential energy. Conservation of energy. Center of mass. Kinetic energy for systems of particles. Collisions. Moment of inertia. Steiner's theorem. Kinetic energy of rotation of rigid body. Gyroscopic motion. Simple harmonic motion. Physical pendulum.
