Aim: The aim of the course is an introduction to the practical aspects of organic synthesis, thereby illuminating several of the theoretical subjects dealt with in 91322 and 91332. The laboratory course is taken simultaneously with 91332.
|
Contents: After a number of introductory exercises, each student performs 10 small-scale syntheses. Generally the ten selected types of reaction are: 1) Bromination, 2) Alkyl halide formation, 3) Esterification, 4) Hydrolysis of ester or amide, 5) Nitration, 6) Reduction, 7) Oxidation, 8) Diazotization, 9) "Friedel-Crafts", 10) "Grignard".
The experiments are based on standard laboratory techniques. Each exercise involves stoichiometric computations, consultation of the authorized register of hazardous chemicals ("Risk-statements"), as well as a simple examination in the theoretical aspects of the exercise. Products are analysed by standard methods. In addition selected samples are analysed by TLC, GC, IR- and NMR-spectroscopy.
In order to fulfill the requirements of the course, written reports on all exercises must be approved.
