Aim: The aim of the course is to give the student a knowledge on basic principles of biotechnologi. The main subject is fermentation technology. Taken in combination with one of the optional laboratory courses Applied Microbiology (91566) or Down Streem Processing (91567) the student should be able to take part in operational and developmental work in the fermentation industry.

Contents: Microbial metabolism and its regulation. Selection and improvement of industrial production strains. Microbial stoichometry and media formulation. Microbial growth kinetics. Sterilisation. Design of fermentors. Instrumentation and control. Aeration and agitation. Product isolation and purification. Selected fermentation processes. Safety and environmental aspects. Fermentation economics.
