Department: Department of Applied Chemistry
Aim: The aims of the course are to demonstrate the principles of Fluid Mechanics to engineering problems, to demonstrate some of the equipment used and to present the results of measurements and observations in simple written reports.
Contents: Measurements of liquid flow (current meter, orifice, rotameter); friction factor. Measurements of gas flow (capillary flowmeter, rotameter, pitot tube). Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquids: Measurements of viscosity and shear stress, calculation of constants of non-Newtonian flow equation (falling-ball viscometer, rotational viscometer). Measurement of liquid surface tension, interfacial tension and contact angles.
